Encounter Summary: 

Jeanne Hyde called Dave at home to report that Ivan Reiff had spotted a small group of whales from shore at LandBank heading north in Haro Strait. Dave and Jeanne headed down to Snug Harbor and left aboard Orca at 1020.Glacier Spirit had a early trip and found the whales off D'Arcy Island and we could see where they were before we even left the harbor.As we were approaching the scene, it looked like the whales were finishing up a kill about a mile north of D'Arcy Island. A small whale breached a couple of times. The five whales turned out to be the T124A's and they soon began traveling north in the direction of Stuart Island. T124A1 and T124A5 were not present. T124A1 is a young female and she often separates from the group and travels with other whales. However, T24A5 was last year's calf and a little too young to be dispersing. While T124A5 was present back in February, this is our third encounter with the T124A's since then when it has not been there and we are beginning to think it may be dead.Glacier Spirit had left the T's earlier and then found a pair of humpback whales off Turn Point. We decided to go take a look at the humpbacks and left the T124A's heading north mid-strait west of Battleship Rock at 1110. We got on the humpbacks five minutes later a little east of Gooch Island. The pair were heading south down Haro Strait toward the T124A's. The humpbacks were cooperative and both fluked for us and they later turned out to be BCX1057 and BCX1068. We left the humpbacks at 1135 still heading south down mid-Haro Strait.We then headed back for another brief look at the T124A's who had moved a little west and were now near Tom Point on Gooch Island. They were still traveling but were now pointed west and we soon left them again on the north side of Gooch Island at 1155.
