Encounter Summary:

Around 1530 the SRKW’s reported by Paul in the morning began arriving in onesy’s twosey’s near Eagle Point, so Ken and Gail departed Snug Harbor at 1555 and headed down Haro Strait toward False Bay where the whales were presumed to be heading. Enroute they encountered a group of Transients that the whale-watching fleet had found offshore of False Bay, so they diverted for about forty minutes to confirm the identifications with proof of presence photos before continuing on to the SRKW’s reported further southeast a few miles away. The Transients were in a resting group, seemingly unperturbed by the vessels accompanying them a few hundred yards to the west. The boats reported that the whales had been first found resting northwest of Eagle Point, and they continued in a regular surfacing pattern for a dozen or so respirations every ten minutes or so. We confirmed that these were the same whales that Dave had encountered yesterday (8th August, Encounter 65), to wit: T2C, T2C1, T2C2, T2C3, T37, T37B, T37B1, and T34, and T34A.

There were apparently no predation events observed as the whales continued up Haro Strait in the direction of Kelp Reef, and then up the West side of D’Arcy Island after we left them. At the closest point, the SRKW’s and the Transients were probably no more than five miles apart, but as usual there was no mixing.

We ended the encounter with the Transients and proceeded toward Eagle Point to try to find the Residents.
