Encounter Summary:

Because the J17's were not represented in yesterday's encounter, Ken went out in "Chimo" for a brief encounter with this group as they traveled south in Haro Strait in Speiden Channel. Like yesterday's whales, they were very spread out over the eastern half of the strait as they headed toward Kellett Bluff and passed the Center around 1700.

Notes-Comments: The very spread distribution of the SRKW population currently in these core waters of the Salish Sea is in contrast to many past years' encounters in which virtually the entire population gets together at this time of year and socializes between feeding episodes in Haro Strait. We will continue to document the pattern over the autumn period when fall Chinook are migrating for spawning in the Fraser River system. There is a connection between predator and prey distribution and behavior that we would like to demonstrate more precisely for management.
