Encounter Summary:

Jeanne Hyde called early in the morning to report whales on the west side of SJI. Dave and Kathy headed over to CWR and then down to Snug Harbor before leaving aboard Orca at 1053.
Orca got on whales at 1107 in front of CWR. The whales were spread out in small groups and individuals. We briefly got a look at J38 and K42 traveling together before moving on to a group including J22, K14, K36, K27, and K44 who were traveling quickly towards Kellett Bluff. K26 was inshore of this group, closer to Smugglers Cove while J34 was offshore and traveling quickly north by himself.
Near the rocks of Kellett Bluff, J2 and K26 as well as K14, K36, and the K27's milled briefly before continuing north. L72 and L105 ducked into Open Bay while L92 headed north about a quarter mile west of the bluff. North of Kellett Bluff, L92, L90, L72, and L105 formed up into a group and traveled north off Battleship Rock. There was a larger group further offshore and this turned out to be all of the K13's plus L47 and L115. L91 and L122 were just a bit inshore of the others.
Behind the K13's/L47's group, we found K22 and K33 traveling together with K43 nearby. A larger group offshore of them proved to be all the J14's plus L86 and L106 and they moved quickly northwest toward Stuart Island. We then found L87 traveling north by himself about a mile west of Tiptop Hill on Stuart Island.
Around noon, after a large group of J's and L's passed close to shore near CWR, Ken went out in Chimo. From about 1245-1315, Ken followed a large group that included the J11's, J17's, J19's, K16's, L55's and K21 from Kellett Bluff to off of Spieden Island. Orca also saw this group after Chimo departed and left them traveling north off Tiptop Hill on Stuart Island at 1330. K35 was acting excited and breached a few times and well as doing a couple of dorsal fin slaps.
Earlier in the day we had heard about the L12's staying at the south end of SJI and the L54's as well as L84 and L88 had been found heading south in southern Rosario Strait. We decided to head south and see the southern whales and finally arrived on scene at 1440 about six miles south of Salmon Bank. We found L85 foraging by himself and the rest of the whales were very spread out. We then saw L84 but he was the only one of his group of five we could find this day. To the northwest of L84, we found L22 and L89 foraging loosely together. The were a pair (maybe three) of Pacific white-sided dolphins in the area too and they briefly traveled with L22. L25 and L41 were foraging separately about a half mile south of L22 and L89. After looking around for more whales, we finally found L94 and L121 about a mile east of L25 and L41. L113 was foraging by herself a couple hundred yards away from L94 and L113. We ended the encounter at 1625 with the whales still spread out and looking like they were all heading south.
