Encounter Summary:

After hearing over the radios that residents were found heading east near Constance Bank, Dave and Giles headed down to Snug Harbor and left aboard Orca around 1455. We first went to Roche Harbor to top off Orca with fuel and got going again at 1325. We arrived on scene with the leaders about 3/4's of a mile south of the Beaumont Shoal marker at 1605.

The very first group we saw was J17, J53, and J44 who were slowly traveling northeast toward SJI in a tight group. The rest of the J17's were spread out foraging about a half mile south of the others. J28, J35, J46, and J47 briefly came together as they began heading quickly toward SJI before they split up again. J28 and J46 remained loosely together and J46 breached four times in front of Mt. Baker. All the J17's continued on toward the SJI shoreline.

J42 and J50 showed up around 1648 a couple of miles west of Hannah Heights. The two sisters foraged together briefly before separating again although they both remained foraging in the same area. J26 was foraging another half mile offshore and it looked like he might have briefly chased a fish before he headed northeast toward the west side of SJI. J16 was foraging another half mile to the west and we ended the encounter with her at 1723 a couple miles west of Hannah Heights.

Other boats reported the rest of J and K pods very spread out several miles to the south of us but we headed home due to failing light and never encountered anyone other than the J16's and J17's.
