Encounter Summary:

Transients were spotted near the Lopez Ferry landing in the morning and were eventually re-found in San Juan Channel. Ken had Chimo with him in Port Townsend and his original plan was to head down into Puget Sound to find southern residents. Ken aborted this plan due to sloppy seas in Admiralty Inlet and headed back toward SJI, briefly encountering the fin whale and a pair of humpbacks along the way. Spencer Domico aboard Imagine stayed with the transients until Chimo got on scene near Friday Harbor around 1245. The whales headed slowly down San Juan Channel with some splitting and joining of the four whales who turned out to be the T2C's.

Dave, who had already scrambled for the boat before he had heard Ken's change of plans, arrived on scene in Orca at 1324 when the whales were about a mile south of Turn Island. The whales were milling briefly before going on a long dive and reappeared together heading slowly south down SJ Channel.

Around 1350, after a long dive, T2C2 surfaced by himself for a whole series of breaths before the other three finally surfaced about a quarter mile ahead of him. The other three milled around and waited for him to catch up before all four went down on another long dive together. Again, T2C2 came up first by himself for a whole series of breaths before the other three came up ahead of him and milled around until he caught up. This happened a couple more times until the T2C's were about a quarter mile off the sea lion rock in Cattle Pass. They went on another long dive and resurfaced milling in the tidal slop outside the pass. They must have made a kill as a bunch of gulls began diving in the area of the milling whales. Orca left the scene there at 1440 and Chimo left another 10-15 minutes later.
