Encounter Summary:
While conducting Encounter 95 with residents, Ken received a report that a small group of Transient killer whales was near Pedder Bay slightly northeast of the usual trackline of inbound residents. When Ken and “Chimo” neared Race Rocks it seemed appropriate to divert for a few minutes to identify which whales were involved with the Pedder Bay group, which by that time had moved over toward Bentic Island. At 1724 two adult-sized animals and a younger one appeared briefly in the kelp in the narrow passage behind Bentic Island and Vancouver Island. Their behavior was very cryptic as they made two complete circumnavigations of Bentic Island very close to shore. On the second roundabout Ken was able to get confirming photos that they were T41, T41A, and T41A2.
