Encounter Summary:
There were whales everywhere today. The day started out with reports of a group of whales heading west out of Deception Pass and a lone male heading east from Race Rocks. More whales that showed up in Rosario Strait turned out to be J pod that made it down to the southeast end of Lopez Island before turning around and heading back up Rosario Strait by mid-afternoon. The group heading west from Deception Pass turned out to be the T101's and T124A's heading southwesterly and were past Hein Bank by late afternoon. Ken was out on a Victoria whale watch boat with these whales and this is encounter 25-1. The lone male was T103 and he came east until he was left and lost by whale watch boats somewhere southeast of Discovery Island in the early afternoon.
Dave got a call at home at 1425 from Mark Malleson relaying a report of yet another group of whales off Kellett Bluff. About ten minutes later Jane Cogan called to say she was seeing whales head south past her place. Since no one knew who these whales were yet, Dave went down to the boat and left Snug harbor aboard Orca at 1510. Before Orca got to the whales, they were identified as the T65A's, T65B's, T75B's, and T75C-a group that has been around a lot in the last week or so.
Orca got on scene at 1530 about a mile southwest of Hannah Heights. The whales were in a tight group slowly heading southeast. After a couple of series of surfacings to get right side ID's, Orca went on a short search in hopes of finding T103. The water was flat calm for scanning with binoculars but T103 had disappeared at that point. Orca headed back to the group at 1625 as they continued slowly in the same direction still in a tight group. Orca ended the encounter at 1637 about a mile west of False Bay.
