Encounter Summary:

Stewart Macintyre went on an early morning drive down the west side of SJI and saw a bunch of whales heading north from Hannah Heights. Stewart photographed many whales from LandBank and Lime Kiln that we did not see later from the boat including J2, L87, the J11's, J14's, J16's, J19's, and J22's. The whales reached CWR by about 0830 and Stewart called Dave at home. Dave, Stewart, and Michelle met at Snug Harbor and left aboard Orca at 0945.
We got on the trailers at 1000 mid-Haro Strait off Battleship Rock. This was the five L47's and they were in a tight group heading north at a medium speed. We left them after ten minutes to go up ahead where there were more whales that were just approaching Turn Point. The leaders had already passed Turn Point and we never made it to them. We had the K12's plus L27, L86, and L106 go by us just off Turn Point in a group and then the K13's filed past. We headed north with the K13's and then the J17's caught up from the rear and formed a loosely spread group with the K13's. K13 did a big spyhop for us and K27 breached once. We left the K13's and J17's pointed toward Swanson Channel a little after 1030 and headed to a group who were about 3/4s of a mile to the west. This group was the K14's and they were heading north in fast travel mode. We left the K14's at 1043 about a mile east of Moresby Island before briefly seeing the trailing L47's again who we left in about the same spot as we left the K14's at 1050.
