Encounter Summary:
Mark left Victoria harbour on Eagle Dancer to follow up a report of many whales west bound in the Oak Bay Flats spotted from shore by Dale Mitchell of Eaglewing. He assumed it would turn out to be J's and K's as they had come down from the north the evening before and were heard at 2230 on the LK hydrophone.
Mark spotted what did turn out to be J's and K's traveling quickly through the water against a big flood and surfing in the south east swell south of Trial Island. It was quite dramatic seeing them in the 3 - 4 foot seas but not making a lot of headway against the strong flood. As they got further west towards Constance Bank the water got flatter as the flood ended and they started to spread out. He left them west of Constance Bank headed for Race Rocks. Mark didn't observe obvious signs of feeding or foraging in the 2 hours he was with them.
