Encounter Summary:
The eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca was glass calm, so Ken decided to bring “Chimo” back from John Wayne Marina at Sequim to Snug Harbor. Enroute, at 1300 he encountered J22 and J34 loitering in Haro Strait off Land Bank, San Juan Island before proceeding to Snug Harbor. Later in the day, around 1730, the rest of J pod and a few K whales came south in Haro Strait very spread out as they headed toward False Bay with occasional brief chases of fish at the surface. Ken embarked on “Shachi” to add to the earlier encounter, but it was not possible to photo-identify all of the whales in the fading light with the whales spread out over 20 or more square miles. Nonetheless, indicator animals from both J and K pod were present. K25 swam placidly along allowing a glimpse of his healing tag scar wounds which were now barely visible except for a small area of skin sloughing at the site. The bumps from embedded barbs are gone. The water was beautifully calm all day, but there was very little sea life evident except for the spread out whales and an occasional gull. J37 and J49 silhouetted in the backlight of mid-Haro Strait as the encounter ended at 1905, still in glass calm water as the whales headed south.
