Encounter Summary:

J pod was reported on the west side of San Juan Island, so Ken went out in "Chimo" to check on the condition of J28 because she had appeared lean in photographs taken on 20 August. As usual lately, the whales were very spread out along the island with no common direction. Some whales had already passed Open Bay heading north as "Chimo" came out of Snug Harbor, and the first whales encountered were J16 and J50 right off of Mitchell Point. A male, probably J26, was already off Kellett Bluff a mile ahead. These were the presumed "leaders". Further south at the north end of Hannah Heights a group of four whales lolled around at the surface for about fifteen minutes and then they began porpoising north along the shoreline. They were J36, J52, and J40 and J41. Apparently, J28 was among trailers further south and they all continued toward Eagle Point where she was seen later in the evening. The group rapidly heading north was left just north of Mitchell Point where the encounter had begun. Ken docked "Chimo" back at Snug Harbor and went back to CWR to await the trailers, but they remained near Eagle Point until dark.
The following morning (0944, 26 August) J28 swam past CWR heading south with a group of Js, so she and the others apparently did continue north in the night.
